3 Seconds Divorce
Film Screening and Discussion
What happens when a man is allowed to divorce his wife by merely saying the word ‘divorce’ three times? According to the practice of triple talaq in India, a Muslim man can do just that. 3 Seconds Divorce – Interactive, is a web-based documentary exploring the effects of triple talaq on Muslim women in India. It calls attention to the indigenous movement of Muslim women who are asking for a ban on instant triple talaq on the grounds that it is against their Qur’anic and constitutional rights. 3 Seconds Divorce – Interactive introduces viewers to Riffat, who was divorced via triple talaq; Noorjehan Safia Niaz, an activist who is seeking a ban on this practice; and Mufti Mohammad Adil, an imam who opposes the proposed ban.
