Justice for the Rohingya – by Professor Payam Akhavan

Aug 27th 2018

Justice for the Rohingya
By Prof. Payam Akhavan

The genocide against the Rohingya of Myanmar is one of the gravest human rights challenges of our time. Over one million have become refugees in neighbouring Bangladesh. They tell stories of systematic murder, torture, rape, and the destruction of their homes and villages. How can the perpetrators of these crimes be brought to justice?

Payam Akhavan (LLM, SJD) is Professor of International Law at McGill University and a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, with prior academic appointments at Yale, Toronto, Paris, Florence, and Oxford. He was formerly a UN prosecutor at The Hague in the trial of Yugoslav leaders for ethnic cleansing, and also appeared as counsel in leading cases before the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the European Court of Human Rights.  Prof. Akhavan was selected as the CBC Massey Lecturer in 2017 and his companion book “In Search of a Better World” became the top non-fiction bestseller in Canada.
