Ruba Kana’an is the current Noor Chair in Islamic Studies at York University. She is a specialist on Islamic art, the urban histories of pre-modern Muslim societies, and the interface between art and law in Muslim contexts. She has a BSc in architecture (Jordan 1987), and an MPhil and a DPhil in Islamic art and architecture from Oxford University (UK 1993 and 1998). She has held the posts of Dean and Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Research Fellow at Oxford University and Visiting Fellow at the Aga Khan Programme for Art and Architecture at Harvard University. Prior to her career as an academic, Professor Kana’an was engaged in cultural heritage management and research on the built environment and sustainable energy design.
