Tribute to Professor Saba Mahmood (1961-2018) : Video & Discussion
In tribute to Professor Saba Mahmood – who passed away on March 10 – we will be showing video excerpts and leading a discussion about Mahmood’s ground-breaking contributions to scholarly discourse on Islam and Muslims.
Dr. Saba Mahmood (1962-2018) was a professor of social cultural anthropology at University of California, Berkeley. Her scholarly work focused on Muslim-majority societies of the Middle East and South Asia. Mahmood made major theoretical contributions to rethinking the relationship between ethics and politics, religion and secularism, freedom and submission, and reason and embodiment. She wrote on issues of gender, religious politics, secularism, and Muslim and non-Muslim relations in the Middle East.
