The Rohingya Genocide:
3rd anniversary of the 2017 Mass Exodus

August 25 marks the third anniversary of the 2017 mass exodus of Rohingya from their homeland in Myanmar, when over 700,000 Rohingya were forced to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.

According to the United Nations, the Rohingya are “one of,  if not the the most, discriminated people in the world” 

In November 2019, the Gambia initiated a case against Myanmar for violations of the UN Genocide Convention at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).  In the meantime, the Rohingya remaining in Myanmar continue to face extreme persecution, while those who have fled languish in refugee camps, including an estimated million in Bangladesh alone.

Please join us for a discussion with our panel of experts and advocates to discuss the current situation, the status of international responses, and what Canada can and should do.

Panellists:

Zainab Arkani: founder member, Rohingya Association of Canada 

Dr Aliya Khan : Professor of Medicine; member of UOSSM (Union des organisations de secours et soins medicaux), Doctors for Humanity, and other international relief agencies.

Kevin Malseed: Longtime human rights advocate on Myanmar,  who has worked with/for Inter Pares and Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) which he founded in 1992. 

Prof John Packer : Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) at the University of Ottawa.
