A widely prevalent notion in the West is that Islam is a religion defined by violence. In fact, that belief is a distortion of the religion’s tradition, history, and the actions and beliefs of many of its followers around the globe today. There is a rich heritage of non-violence in Islam – in its sources and history, as well as in modern-day Muslim societies.
Amitabh Pal is the author of ““Islam”Means Peace: Understanding the Muslim Principle of Non-Violence Today” (Praeger; 2011) *. He is managing editor of “The Progressive Magazine“, founded in 1909, and co-editor of the “Progressive Media Project“, an op-ed service. He has interviewed several eminent personalities for the magazine, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama, and Joseph Stiglitz. His work has been included in school and college textbooks, and he has appeared on BBC, C-SPAN, and on radio stations through the United States and abroad.
