Black History Month Program | Film & Discussion with Imam Yasin Dwyer

In 1995, Parliament designated February as Black History Month, to “celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians”. We also dedicate this time to reflecting on anti-Black racism.

Please join us for this special program in honour of Black History Month:

1:30 – 5:00 pm | Screening of ‘Malcolm X‘ (1992) by Spike Lee
5:00 – 6:00 pm | Discussion with Imam Yasin Dwyer
Note: the film is 3.5 hours long and will be screened in full for the benefit of those interested. Please feel free to join the program whenever you wish.

Imam Yasin Dwyer was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Jamaican parents. Before joining Muslim Chaplaincy at Ryerson University, Yasin was a part of the multi-faith chaplaincy at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has lectured extensively on topics such as spirituality and the arts, Black Canadian culture and the history of Muslims in the West. Along with working alongside many non-profit organizations in Canada, Yasin was the first full-time Muslim chaplain to work with the Correctional Service of Canada, a position he held for 12 years. He is also a board member of the Montreal-based Institute Route de la Soie/Silk Road Institute, which is dedicated to expressing Canadian Muslim narratives through the visual, auditory and performing arts.
