A One Kingdom Solution?: Marriage, Diplomacy and Sovereignty in Muslim-Christian Relations during the 3rd Crusade

The Crusades are often portrayed as emblematic of a historic and abiding Christian-Muslim religious and civilizational conflict. This lecture explores alternative views to our inherited historical narratives by examining a curious episode in the history of the Third Crusade: an offer of marriage by Richard the Lionheart of his sister Joan of Sicily to Salah-al-Din’s brother al-Adil. Against prevailing views that dismiss the offer as unserious, the lecture explores the possibilities and implications of the marriage proposal in the context of Muslim-Christian relations broadly in the era of late 12th and 13th century crusading and Mediterranean history.

Dr. Adnan Husain is Associate Professor in the Department of History at Queen’s University. He now principally studies and teaches on the cross-cultural and inter-religious encounters among the Muslims, Christians and Jews of Latin Christendom and the Islamic world in the Mediterranean zone from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries.
