This lecture explores matrimonial practices in U.S. Muslim communities including the search for a suitable spouse, expectations for marriage, and weddings as sites where American Muslims negotiate gender roles, as well as ideas about religion and culture.

Dr. Juliane Hammer is Associate Professor and Kenan Rifai Scholar of Islamic Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her books include American Muslim Women, Religious Authority, and Activism: More than a Prayer (2012) and The Cambridge Companion to American Islam (co-edited with Omid Safi, 2013).
