Religiously-Marked Bodies in the Multicultural Public Sphere
by Itrath Syed
Recent events in Quebec and the rest of Canada demonstrate how differing understandings of secularism and multiculturalism shape public perception of acceptable participation in the public sphere. This lecture will explore how certain of these understandings have placed limits on Muslims – and religiously-marked people in general – from full involvement and expression in Canada.
Itrath Syed is a PhD Candidate in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, where her doctoral project involves an analysis of ‘moral panics’, and Muslim bodies in the West. Her MA work (Women’s Studies, UBC) explored the gendered and racialized construction of the Muslim community in the media discourse surrounding the Islamic Arbitration or ‘shariah’ debate in Ontario.
