The Animals Among Us, Part 3 – Animals as Legal Persons? Animals in the Law
With Lesli Bisgould

Recent North American cases have challenged the legal status of non-human animals as “things” (which lack the capacity to possess rights), arguing that at least some non-humans should be considered “persons” (entitled to such fundamental rights as bodily integrity and liberty). This lecture will discuss the history, current status, and challenges of efforts to have animals recognized as legal persons.

Lesli Bisgould is an Adjunct Professor at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law, teaching the course Introduction to Animals and the Law.  She has been a practicing lawyer since 1992, and for 10 years worked in her own practice in animal rights law – the only practice of its kind in Canada.  Bisgould is the author of Animals and the Law (Irwin Law, 2011)
