Easing into Ramadan with the Qur’an
By Afra Jalabi

We shall keep showing them our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it become clear to them that it is the Truth.” – The Qur’an (41: 53)

The Qur’an does not read like a regular text with a unilinear structure, and a clear beginning and ending. Rather, it is a multi-layered, circular landscape with open entry points – a text filled with stories, parables, superheros, injunctions and calls for reflection upon the universe and the existential place and journey of humanity. Yet this landscape has specific landmarks, repetitive themes and a natural thrust and flow – all of which reveal an underlying coherence and message.

This workshop will examine some key passages and verses that enable the reader to navigate this landscape and travel its various neighborhoods, enabling access to the Qur’an’s exciting realms for intellectual growth and personal healing. In dealing with the language barrier of the Qur’an, it will provide practical tools to open “horizons” and enlighten the self within.

Afra Jalabi is a journalist, non-violence activist and scholar, and a frequent media commentator on Syria.  She is a regular presenter at Noor, where she often speaks about non-violence from a Qur’anic perspective.  She is working on a PhD in Qur’anic hermeneutics at Concordia University.
