Gender, Islam and the Political Order in Contemporary Iran
by Professor Victoria Tahmasebi

This lecture will examine the mutual relationship between gendered bodies, moral order and political discourse in post-revolutionary Iran. It will discuss why and how gender identities have become embedded in the routinized practice of Velayatmadari (obedience to the supreme leader), explaining the symbolic shift in the role and the function of Vali-ye Faghi (the Supreme Leader) in relation to Iran’s body politics.

Professor Victoria Tahmasebi, PhD, teaches women and gender studies at University of Toronto Mississauga.  Her areas of specialization include contemporary history of social and political thought, women and human rights in the Middle-East, gender and ethics of non-violence, continental feminism, and critical theories of women’s movements.
