Listen to the Cry of Glorification from Above: Rumi and the Qur’an

A lecture by Professor Nargis Virani, The New School for Social Research

Date: Monday January 21, 2008
Time: Noon

Location: The Renaissance Room, 001 Vanier College, York University
Admission: No charge

Nargis Virani (Ph.D Harvard) specializes in Arabic language and literature, Persian language and literature, Islamic Intellectual Thought, and Sufism. Her doctoral dissertation analyzed the Mulamma’at, the mixed-language poems, in Rumi’s Diwan. In this work, she proposes that ‘speaking in many tongues’ be looked at as a brilliant linguistic strategy employed by the mystic to fashion an imaginative form of apophatic discourse.
