Post-Revolution Iran Film Series:
“The Day I Became a Woman” by Marzieh Meshkini

Please join us for the third session in this film series – a screening of “The Day I Became a Woman” by Merzieh Meshkini; followed by a discussion led by Khatereh Sheibani.

About “The Day I Became a Woman”
The Day I Became a Woman (2000) is a collection of three short stories, each focusing on a different stage in the lives of Iranian women, and their struggles against the constraints that have been placed on them. This moving and visually striking film received awards at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, and the Chicago International Film Festival.

Khatereh Sheibani has a PhD in Comparative Literature (University of Alberta, 2007) and currently teaches literature and cinema courses at York University. She has co-edited a special issue of Iran Namag on Abbas Kiarostami (w/ M. Tavakoli Targhi, Volume 2, No. 4, Winter 2017-18, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada). Her book, The Poetics of Iranian Cinema: Aesthetics, Modernity, and Film after the Revolution, was published in 2011 by I.B.Tauris, UK. Khatereh has published articles in anthologies of film and literature, and in journals such as Iranian Studies and Canadian Journal of Film Studies. She has published poems in various literary journals and newspapers in Iran and Canada.

This series is curated by Daniel Davidson-Kalmar, who holds a Master’s Degree in Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto. Within his general interest in international film, he has a particular passion for Iranian cinema.
