Museums as Human Rights Activists
By Professor Jennifer Orange
Over the past twenty years, museums on six continents have hosted exhibits and programs that address ongoing human rights struggles. Museums are not only presenting human rights history in their exhibits; they are engaging in molding its future through campaigns and political activism. Their trusted position as cultural institutions, and their expertise in knowledge collection, educational programming and cross-cultural dialogue, provide a unique advantage in addressing the problems that people face in their every-day lives. In 2014, Canada will join this endeavour with the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
