‘Minaret‘ (2005) follows the journey of Najwa, a young woman forced to flee her home in Sudan in the wake of the Second Sudanese Civil War, and move to London. Contending with loss, racism, and poverty, Najwa is able to find freedom and security through her faith. The book was nominated for the UK’s Women’s Prize for Fiction, and the IMPAC Dublin Award
Leila Aboulela is an award-winning novelist, originally from Sudan and living in Scotland.
