What is Happiness and How Can We Enhance It?
With Dr. Tayyab Rashid

We know happiness matters, but what does ‘happiness’ mean? It is often equated with pleasures in the moment – from the tickling of our senses to the purchasing of latest gadgets.  Sorting through the conventional wisdom and scientific insights, this workshop demystifies happiness and presents its markers and makers. Through real-life narratives, participants will discern happiness based on the notion of ‘the good life’ —a virtuous existence imbued with positive emotions, engagement, meaning, positive relationships & accomplishment.  Participants will learn evidence-based strategies that can make their lives more fulfilling and satisfying.

Dr. Tayyab Rashid is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Health and Wellness Centre at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC).  During his doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Rashid developed Positive Psychotherapy (PPT) under the mentorship of Dr. Martin Seligman—pioneer of positive psychology, learned optimism.  Dr. Rashid’s expertise includes positive clinical psychology, strength-based resilience, positive education, posttraumatic growth and multicultural counselling. Author of numerous scholarly papers, Dr. Rashid consults with several non-profit organization, and has also worked with Asian tsunami survivors and families of 9/11 victims. Before joining UTSC, Dr. Rashid worked with the Toronto District School Board and as the Director of Applied Research, Values in Action Institute. Trained in hatha yoga, and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), Dr. Rashid advocates for an active, realistic and culturally-nuanced search for the half-full portion of the proverbial glass to survive, thrive and flourish.
